Donald Trump’s latest stunt spells BAD fuel price news for SA’s motorists

· The South African

The threat of Monday’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by the United States military has intensified concerns about global oil supply, with potential knock-on effects for fuel prices in South Africa.

The development follows the collapse of high-level talks in Islamabad between the United States and Iran, after which President Donald Trump announced plans to restrict shipping linked to Iran through the vital trade route.

Vice President JD Vance had been leading the negotiations before they broke down.

The US military said the blockade would begin at 16:00 (SA time), and apply to all ships leaving or seeking to dock at Iranian ports on either side of the key waterway.

The brent crude oil price jumped above $100 a barrel shortly after Trump’s announcement and the rand weakened against the US dollar.

Critical oil corridor

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil transit corridors, carrying a substantial share of global crude exports.

Any disruption to shipping in the narrow waterway – whether through direct enforcement of a blockade or heightened security risks – has immediate implications for international oil markets.

Iran has warned that any attempt to block its ports would be regarded as an act of piracy, raising the prospect of further escalation in an already volatile region.

While a temporary ceasefire had eased those concerns, the renewed threat of a blockade has reintroduced uncertainty.

Significant implications

For South Africa, the implications could be significant.

The country imports most of its fuel, making local petrol and diesel prices highly sensitive to global oil price movements and currency fluctuations.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy adjusts fuel prices on a monthly basis, meaning any sustained increase in crude oil costs could soon be felt at the pump.

Analysts warn that even the risk of disruption in the Strait of Hormuz can drive prices higher, as traders factor in potential supply shortages and increased shipping costs.

It remains unclear how the US military would enforce the proposed blockade, but markets are expected to remain on edge as developments unfold.

With geopolitical tensions continuing to shape global energy markets, South African motorists face an uncertain outlook, with the possibility of higher fuel prices if the situation escalates further.

If the market conditions were to remain consistent for the remainder of the month – an unlikely scenario with the rand/dollar exchange rate fluctuating and the oil price ever changing – an increase of 300 cents per litre is expected for petrol 93 octane motorists and an increase of 338 cents for 95 users is anticipated.

Meanwhile, diesel motorists would see something between a 1 015 and 1 018 cents per litre increase.

Finally, illuminating paraffin is expected to rise by 797 cents in price.
